Types of Rice and When to Use Them
Basmati Rice
If you love a good biryani or fragrant pilaf, basmati is your go-to. The long grains cook up light and fluffy, staying beautifully separate — never clumpy. We carry both white and organic brown basmati if you're after a healthier rice option.
Jasmine Rice
Think Thai curries, stir-fries, or a simple bowl alongside grilled fish — jasmine rice just works. It's soft, slightly sticky, and has that subtle floral aroma that makes everything smell amazing.
Sushi Rice (Short Grain)
Getting that perfect sushi roll or poke bowl starts with the right rice. Short grain sushi rice goes sticky and tender when cooked, so everything holds together the way it should.
Arborio & Carnaroli Rice
Want silky, restaurant-quality risotto at home? These are the two Italian varieties worth knowing. Both release starch slowly as they cook, giving you that creamy texture without turning to mush.
Bomba Rice
If you're making paella, don't cut corners on the rice. Bomba is the Spanish variety grown specifically for the job — it soaks up all those gorgeous saffron and stock flavours without going soft.
Brown, Red & Black Rice
These whole-grain varieties are some of our most popular healthy rice choices, and for good reason. More fibre, more minerals, and a lovely nutty flavour that white rice simply can't match.
Wild Rice
Technically a grass seed rather than true rice, but don't let that put you off. Wild rice is packed with protein, has a satisfying chewy bite, and adds a wonderfully earthy depth to salads, soups, and grain blends.
How to Choose the Right Rice
Not sure where to start? You're not alone — with so many rice varieties out there, it's easy to feel a little overwhelmed. Here are the questions we get asked most often.
What's the best rice for diabetics?
Whole grain varieties are generally the better choice here. Brown, red, black, and wild rice all have a lower glycaemic index (GI) than white rice, meaning they digest more slowly and have a gentler effect on blood sugar. Brown basmati is also worth a mention — it's one of the lower-GI options among long-grain varieties and still cooks up beautifully.
Cooking method matters too. Parboiled rice and even cooled, reheated rice have been shown to have a lower GI than freshly boiled white rice — so a little meal prep can actually work in your favour.
That said, everyone's different. For advice tailored to your situation, it's always best to speak with your doctor or an accredited dietitian.
What's the difference between jasmine and basmati rice?
Both are aromatic long-grain varieties, but they behave quite differently in the kitchen. Basmati cooks up dry and fluffy with grains that stay nicely separate — ideal for Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. Jasmine is a little softer and stickier, with a subtler scent that pairs perfectly with Asian cooking. A simple rule of thumb: basmati for biryanis, jasmine for curries.
How should rice be stored?
An airtight container in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight is all you need. White rice keeps well for up to two years that way, while whole grain varieties like brown, red, and black rice are best used within six to twelve months — their bran layer contains natural oils that can turn over time. Once cooked, pop it in the fridge and eat within two to three days. If you've bought one of our 5kg bulk bags, splitting it into smaller portions as you go helps keep everything fresh for longer.
